Anything is compatible if you use a hammer...not!

As a rider, you want your bike to function properly and perform as intended. One crucial aspect of achieving this is choosing compatible bike parts. Using parts that are not compatible can lead to problems such as poor performance, decreased efficiency, total failure, and even in some cases void warranty. That's why it's essential to know which parts work together seamlessly and which ones don't. Some cyclists might be tempted to mix and match bike parts in order to save money or make use of parts they already have. But it's important to remember that bike components are designed and tested to work with specific parts and systems. Forcing incompatible components to work together can compromise the safety and functionality of a bike. There are times where getting components work together without proper knowledge or experience can result in costly mistakes and potentially dangerous situations. It's always better to invest in compatible and reliable components, rather than taking the risk of damaging your bike or putting yourself in harm's way.

Bicycle part compatibility refers to the ability of different components to work together seamlessly. It ensures that the bike functions properly and performs as intended. This is why Bike Matrix prioritises true compatibility over everything else. While there are many aftermarket parts that can be made compatible with a little bit of trickery, we draw a line in the sand. If nine out of ten mechanics recommend a particular compatibility combination, then so do we.

For example, if you own a bike with a Shimano 12-speed drivetrain, we wouldn't recommend using a SRAM 12-speed chain, as both manufacturers attest that this combination won't work optimally. Similarly, we wouldn't suggest pairing a Shimano 12-speed derailleur with an aftermarket 52T 12-speed cassette as this will void the derailleur warranty. While you might be able to set up these components and get them "working," you'll never achieve optimal shifting performance, compromising your riding experience.

Instead, we provide suggestions for alternate reputable aftermarket components that can be used as suitable replacements. We work with aftermarket parts manufacturers to showcase their products as compatible replacements. For instance, we might recommend a set of Galfer FD293 standard brake pads that have been engineered to fit multiple callipers as a suitable replacement pad for a Shimano BR-MT200 caliper. The manufacturing tolerances used are identical to those used by Shimano, and the braking compound has been engineered to deliver sufficient stopping power for this brake caliper. Most mechanics would, therefore, recommend these brake pads alongside the genuine Shimano B03S brake pad.

The beauty of the aftermarket component market is that there are countless options to choose from. However, this can also be overwhelming for consumers. That's why, by filtering the options that are compatible with their bike, cyclists can make informed decisions based on their needs and budget. For example, if you own a mountain bike that takes a beating, Bike Matrix will filter your search to find wheels compatible with your bike, allowing you to choose the option that suits your riding style and budget, saving you time and maximising the time you can instead be out riding!

At Bike Matrix, we work with aftermarket parts manufacturers to showcase their products as suitable replacements. Spank Industries says it best: "Bike Matrix is changing the game! Who wants to buy the wrong part when an epic weekend of riding is ahead. Finding the right part the first time is something we can get behind."
